I paint and listen to the beautiful Jewish music of the Shostakovich Lullaby. And now I hear another Lullaby by a Jewish woman composed in a Death Camp where she died.  "... I have heard his wail under a hail of stones..."  The gales outside are making the music of wind.  The girl wears a blue patterned dress and scarf round her head like a madonna.  Her small brother she is holding is wailing and she looks terrified.

During the war on Afghanistan 2001 we saw on the TV the bombardment like smoke across the mountain tops coming from the terrible weapons of mass destruction - so huge and area was bombed in a second - who had lived there?  This girl holding her small brother I saw in the newspaper.  They were living in a Sufi camp near the Tajikistan border.

By Susan Morland, the artist, 2003.
